What to Expect From Your First Botox Experience

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic treatment that uses small amounts of the botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze your muscles. The end result is a smooth and more refreshed look.
Botox is the brand name of only one brand. There are other cosmetic injectables on the market such as Dysport and Xeomin that are as effective as Botox.
Botox injections work by blocking the receptors between the muscle and nerves. The muscles that were injected are then not able to contract. The helps to create smoother fine lines and helps to reduce the formation of deeper lines.

Concerns and Myths

The word “Toxin” often scares people, but Botox is FDA-approved and safe. Only small amounts are injected into selected areas.
There is a Myth that the effect will NOT look natural. This is not true. The goal is to create a natural and youthful look. After a treatment, you will look less tired and have a more refreshed appearance.

During your consultation appointment. You will talk with the provider about your goals and the areas that most bother you and come up with a treatment plan. This plan will take into account the time and amount of money you have budgeted.

The Procedure

The procedure itself is actually very quick, taking only about 10-15 minutes. Your provider will inject tiny doses of the botulinum into the targeted areas. The needle that is used is very small and you will only feel a tiny prick.

After your Procedure

For the most part, you should be able to carry on with your normal activities after the procedure. However, there are a few things to consider.
There will be some redness at the injection sites. This goes away within a few hours. Aftercare instructions will be given to you at that time.
You should not participate in heavy exercise for the first 24 hours after your treatment. Also, you should avoid exercises like yoga or Pilates, or any activity that would require your head to be in a downward position.
You should not wear caps or headbands. Avoid rubbing the injected areas. It is ok to use your normal skin moisturizers, as long as they are non-abrasive.
Do not take any blood thinners or medications that can thin your blood like ibuprofen for at least 24 hours. This will help decrease your chances of bruising.

When will I start seeing Results?

It will take 3-5 days up to 2 weeks for most botulinum treatments to take effect. The effect will last for a few months. Most patients get treatments on a regular basis. The more regularly you get treatments, the longer the effects last over time.
